Georgia has experienced profound and traumatic political changes in recent years. Since 2024, political tensions have intensified, with the ruling Georgian Dream party remaining in power, large pro-European protests following the disputed parliamentary elections, and the government announcing that it would not pursue EU accession negotiations until 2028.
As political pressure grows, civic space narrows and austerity policies take hold, artists and their work are often among the first to feel the consequences. In this episode, VIDC Director Sybille Straubinger speaks with Georgian documentary filmmaker Salomé Jashi about artistic freedom, civil society protests, and the future of Georgia.

Ab Jänner 2027 wird Österreich für zwei Jahre Mitglied im UNO-Sicherheitsrat. Das Gremium trägt die Hauptverantwortung für die Wahrung des Weltfriedens und der internationalen Sicherheit – ist jedoch seit Jahren durch Vetos immer wieder blockiert. Art and culture in times of war and displacement: Sudan’s ongoing political instability has forced millions of people — including countless cultural workers and artists — to flee their homes. At the same time, new artistic networks and forms of solidarity are emerging across borders. Sudanese artists combine political rap with regional sounds to address social change, resistance, and collective memory.
